Birthday Shoutout - Johnny Covington

RedWolfNation strives to give ASU fans our prospective on the Arkansas State Red Wolves.  But we also like to talk about historical things about Arkansas State, so we will profile a former player and their time at Arkansas State each day on their Birthday.

Today's Birthday - Sept 4th - Johnny Covington QB 6'0 195 - '92-'95

Johnny Covington signed with  Arkansas State and head coach Ray Perkins in 1992.  He was tossed into the fire as a true freshman starting 5 games including getting the nod in games against Oklahoma and Mississippi State.  The Round Rock, Texas native started 37 of the 44 games played during his ASU career.  Covington finished his time at ASU with a number of passing records.  After his senior season in 1995, the four year starter held records for most pass attempts and completions in the game, season, and career categories.   He is currently still in the top 5 in all of those areas.  Covington finished his career with 4,426 yards passing and 24 touchdowns, both of which stand at 6th all time at A-State.  He led his 1995 Indian squad to the 1st winning record (6-5) since ASU's return to Division I.

Covington was later seen in a cameo appearance as an extra in the movie "The Rookie".  He was wearing an ASU hat and trying out for professional baseball.

Happy Birthday to former ASU Indian - #10 Johnny Covington
